bulletWhat bike and gear ratios should I have?

gear ratios

You will need a good, recently serviced, lightweight road bike, ideally less than 9 kgs unloaded weight, with top quality 23mm tyres and tubes and 2 bottle cages. Your saddle should fit you perfectly - the more you know your machine the better. Gear ratios are very important; the wrong ratios can ruin your holiday. Unless you absolutely know your capabilities and have ridden the high cols before you should assume one of the following set-ups:

  • Triple, rings 52:40:30, Cassette 12:26
  • Double, rings 52:39, Cassette 13:29
  • Compact, rings 50:34, Cassette 13:29 (if you are a fit rider a 13:26 can be used)

There are few opportunities to change your set-up enroute so make sure you are comfortable with your bike.
